What?: B.P.R.D. Vol. 4, The Dead

I don’t have a bad thing to say about a single thing I’ve read within the Hellboy Universe. This collection of the mini-series “The Dead” is another fine chapter in the B.P.R.D. series, but didn’t take my breath away. The main story was mostly about change, a new character, some new digs and costumes, and Johann once again getting in too deep. I liked it, and especially loved the Guy Davis art, but I wanted more. I guess I should appreciate the occasional storyline where it isn’t the fate of the world teetering on the brink.

The B story, in which we learn more about the past of Abe Sapien was the highlight of the book. It was downplayed, gorgeous and had a sadness to it that is quintessential Hellboy. This ongoing thread, along with the looming threat of the Frogmen, will have me picking up volume 5 sooner than later, and hopefully the main story will cook with a little more gas.

I’m never let down by these books, don’t get me wrong, and every dollar I send Mignola and Dark Horse is a dollar well spent. When Mignola started the B.P.R.D. series, the whole universe of characters start moving forward with a lot of speed, and it’s going places I can’t wait to see. Start picking these up if you’re looking for a new world to immerse yourself in. You won’t be let down.
